Pre-Purchase Inspection

Before You Buy: Pre-Purchase Inspection

Buying a used Patrol without inspection is risky. A thorough check reveals hidden damage, mechanical issues, and repair costs. Budget AED 300–500 for professional inspection (worth every dirham). Never skip this step, even if the car looks clean. Many expensive problems are invisible until tested.

Engine & Mechanical Checks

Start cold: listen for rough idle, check fluids (oil level/condition, coolant, brake fluid). Warning lights on dashboard? Red flags. Compression test reveals engine wear (should be 140+ PSI per cylinder). Listen for unusual noises: knocking, grinding, ticking. Transmission: test all gears, listen for slipping or grinding. Brake test: stops straight, no sponginess. Steering: smooth, no tight spots.

Cooling & AC System

AC is expensive to repair. Test it: cold air, no noises. Coolant condition matters—dark coolant indicates neglect. Check water hoses for leaks, cracks. Radiator: no rust, clean fins. Thermostat: engine warms up smoothly. AC compressor (listen for click when engaged), proper airflow.

Suspension & Brakes

Drive over bumps: suspension should be firm, not bouncy. Shocks leaking oil = replacement needed (AED 600–1,200 per shock). Brake feel: pedal should be firm, not spongy. Brake pads (check thickness—less than 5mm is near end). Rotors: smooth surface without grooves. Handbrake holds car on slope.

Electrical & Lights

Test all lights: headlights (bright?), brake lights, reverse lights, indicators, interior lights. Windows: smooth operation both directions. Door locks, central locking. Wipers and washers. Power steering (should assist smoothly). Electrical gremlins are common on older vehicles—test everything.

Exterior & Frame

Paint: consistent color and gloss (different colors = repainting, possible accident history). Check for rust, especially under car. Frame damage = totaled vehicle. Gaps between panels should be even (misalignment suggests accident). Tires: tread depth (minimum 4mm), even wear (uneven wear = suspension problem). Check all glass for cracks.

Service History

Most important: full service history. Regular maintenance = well-cared-for vehicle. Missing service records = red flag. Ask for receipts for major work: transmission service, AC gas, suspension replacements. One owner better than 5 owners. Low mileage (under 150k km) = less wear.

The Test Drive

Drive in various conditions: highway, city, turns. Feel for vibrations, unusual noises. Test acceleration, braking responsiveness. Try reverse, parking. How does it handle? Steering should feel responsive. No grinding, clunking, or slipping. Trust your gut—if it feels wrong, it probably is.
